Lampboard

Stepping display

  1. Press a key on the virtual keyboard — each press is listed here with the windows before and after, and which rotors stepped.

The right rotor steps on every press; the middle rotor steps when the right one passes its notch — and drags the left rotor along in the same press (double-stepping). Spaces and punctuation never enter the machine, so they never move a rotor.

Keyboard

Press a key (or your physical keyboard) to encrypt one letter and watch the rotors step.

Plugboard

Click one letter, then its partner to connect them and create a pair. The Army Enigma machine allowed a maximum of 10 plugboard cables.

Reset everything

Reset everything?

This clears:

  • the message you have typed, and its encrypted output
  • the machine — rotor selection, ring settings and plugboard
  • your saved settings, so a reload comes back empty too
  • the stepping history

It cannot be undone. Export your settings first if you want to keep them.

The file is encrypted on this device with AES-256-GCM; the key comes from your password through PBKDF2-SHA256 with 600 000 iterations and a random salt. The password is never stored, never sent to the backend, and cannot be recovered; lose it and the file stays shut. This protects your settings file; it does not make Enigma itself secure.

Enigma is reciprocal: decrypt ciphertext by running it through the same machine settings used for encryption. Reset the rotors to the original starting positions first.
